What Tools Do You Need For Basic Car Repairs?

If you want to have some tools at your disposal just in case you need to fix something minor on your car, then you are at the right place! Here we will explore what basic items you need to have in your garage in order to be prepared to do some work on your car by yourself.

Disclaimer: Never attempt to fix serious car issues by yourself. Take your car to a repair shop of your choice and let the professionals do their job.

With that being said, there are plenty of minor things you can do. For example, changing certain auto body parts may be fairly hard, but you can probably change a headlight, depending on the model. Plus, you’d want to know how to change a dead lightbulb within your tail and headlights. And changing a tire is also good to know. But to handle all these things you’d need tools. So let’s check these out.

The Very Basics

Before we get to some hardcore tools, you need to know that some basics are necessary. That includes a light, preferably one you can hang; and proper protective gear. Gloves are fine, but you need to pick the right ones (not regular latex). Headgear is not necessary, but it can be handy, especially if you can attach a flashlight to it. Also make sure to buy some nice plastic zip ties – these often come in extremely handy. Different sorts of sprays (e.g. lubricants) and tapes are also a great addition.

A Proper Socket Set

This is next on the list, because it is absolute necessity. If you don’t want to pick up anything else, at least have this in your garage. Or even in the trunk of your car. With it you’d be able to change a tire and do some other minor tasks around the vehicle.

Also, don’t cheap out on the set. Cheaper sets are not built well and are not as full as the more expensive variants. Keeping in mind that this is one of the most useful things you can buy, it makes sense to treat it as an investment and get a good one.

Screwdrivers and Wrenches

We lump this under one category, because they are both useful in similar scenarios. You definitely need a good set of both, but this one may not be as full and robust as the socket set. Provided that you can buy screwdrivers with changeable tips, you really don’t need all that much space to keep them either.

Pliers and Cutters

These things are super important not only for work around your car, but around your home as well. Even if you are not planning on undertaking major electrical projects, it is still nice to have the ability to bend some wires and cut them, if necessary. Of course, pliers and wirecutters are useful for many more things but they all depend on your particular situation.
